With the start of school just around the corner, the Pearland Police Department would like to remind local drivers to be aware of children getting on and off of buses.

At the beginning of last year, the Pearland Police Traffic Unit increased their enforcement of vehicles passing school buses while loading and unloading children. During just a two-day period at the start of the school year, dozens of citations were issued to motorists that passed a stopped school bus with the visual stop signals activated.
This year, PPD will again be active in our school zones and will continue to enforce the "Loading and Unloading" of school buses to ensure the safety of students.
Please pay attention to school buses as they come to a stop and activate their blinking yellow lights, signaling that they are about to deploy their red stop signs. As a reminder, unless there is a raised median or divided roadway, motorists are also required to stop for the loading and unloading of children when traveling the opposite direction of the bus.
Violations such as these pose a significant danger to the children and other motorists along the roadway, which is why warnings will not be issued for this type of violation. The Pearland Police Department would prefer that the violation not happen rather than write a large amount of citations, but will continue to enforce the law until the occurrences cease.
Please be mindful of bus traffic and drive safe!
