Construction on the Brazoria County portion of Hwy. 288 southbound has been completed with the exits now open. The county is still working on the northbound portion of the road as well as the ramps, Brazoria County engineer Matt Hanks said.

"We are really approaching the end of our project," Hanks said.

While Brazoria County could not open the toll lanes, it could open the main lanes, leading to a normal traffic pattern, Hanks said. However, Brazoria County is sharing some crew members with Harris County and the Texas Department of Transportation, meaning that some work on the Harris County portion of the toll road is delaying work that could be done on the Brazoria County portion, Hanks said. Hanks said he could possibly get the main lanes open by mid-February, depending on when he has a full crew.

However, opening main lanes does not mean the toll road is open and functioning as well. The county cannot open its portion of toll roads until the Harris County portion is completed, which is set to happen at the end of June, Hanks said.

"I can't open until they open," Hanks said.

Once the main lanes are open, work would continue on the ramps. Work is also continuing on FM 518, or Broadway Street, which could be completed in February as well, he said. One of the lanes opened on Broadway earlier this month.

"We're working as hard as we can to get these done for our citizens," Hanks said.
