We have received numerous calls regarding teenagers selling candy in large shopping center parking lots as part of a supposed "fundraiser." In several cases, individuals have reportedly requested additional monetary donations through cash, Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle transactions. A quick online search shows similar incidents reported nationwide involving what is commonly referred to as the "Cash App candy bar scam." In these cases, individuals posing as youth fundraiser participants allegedly ask to use a person's phone to process a payment. Once given access to an unlocked device, money may be transferred from Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle accounts without authorization. At this time, we are unaware of any confirmed victims in our community related to this specific scam. However, we want residents to remain alert and use caution when approached in parking lots for cashless donations or transactions. Safety tips:
• Never hand your unlocked phone to a stranger
• Do not allow others to enter payment information on your device
• Use caution with peer-to-peer payment apps
• Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement or shopping center security If this occurs in Pearland, please contact our non-emergency number 281-997-4100 to report.

Thanks for the information. I have never made a payment for anything using my phone but this is good to know.
