Pearland ISD dress code changes

Huge changes from 7 years ago when it was only tucked in, solid color polos and pants had to have a belt. How things have changed!
.
Slacks, Jeans, Capri Pants, and Skirts:
ï‚· Shall be a solid color excluding white, and skirts must be no more than 3" above the knee
ï‚· Leather, suede, vinyl, or sheer (see-through) fabrics are not allowed
ï‚· Shall be appropriately sized and fit securely at the waist
ï‚· May not be worn in any way that reflects gang affiliation, conceals contraband, or creates a distraction
ï‚· Athletic shorts, cargo pants, stretch slacks, sweatpants, jogging pants, warm-up suits, leggings (except under
a dress, a jumper, or a skirt) and coveralls are not allowed
ï‚· Shorts and skorts may be worn in grades PK-6.
ï‚· Distressed jeans are allowed but not to the extent that skin is revealed.
Shirts and Blouses:
ï‚· Shirts and blouses may be any color including solids, stripes, prints, and plaids. No see-through fabrics allowed. Collars are not required.
ï‚· Spirit shirts must be campus/district specific, and may include college or professional sports teams
ï‚· Must have sleeves, be appropriately sized, and of appropriate length
ï‚· May not be worn in any way that reflects gang affiliation, conceals contraband, or creates a distraction
ï‚· Leather, suede, vinyl or sheer (see-through) fabrics are not allowed.

At least they can wear t-shirts instead of polos. The polos were more expensive than t-shirts.

@Magnolia832 : They are going to get too relaxed and that's when problems arise. We found polos the same price as T-shirt's. They need to allow 7th grade and higher wear shorts........it's hot in Texas!!

@AFriendofGod : I've lived all over the US, and this is the most restrictive dress code in a public school that we've experienced. My boys wore athletic shorts to school in December in Illinois! Can't even do that in August here.
No point for most of the rules other than to micromanage the kids' lives.

@squidgirl : I disagree. There needs to be restrictions to help deter violence. It is sad to say but fights happen over certain clothing; along with inappropriate behavior (shorts too short or tight - shirts too low or tight). They should also get prepared for the real world.......most work places have dress codes. Why not start preparing them now?

@Soccer2018 : Again, I've had kids in school districts for over 18 years across multiple states. Inanimate objects such as clothes aren't the problem, people are the problem. And I've never seen a fight over clothes.
And no, I don't think we should work so hard to prepare them for the workplace now. They'll have plenty of time later to conform to miserable rules. Let them be kids now.

I grit my teeth saying this, but @Soccer2018 is right.

We have interns in our office now. They are on week 6 of 8 this summer. Requirements are at least a Junior in High School and 17 years old, through graduate students.
I am completely appalled at what some of them think is appropriate work attire, WITH A DRESS CODE that they had to SIGN and agree to when applying for internship.

I was totally against uniforms and dress codes when my kids started school. And yes, PISD's was one of the strictest I've ever dealt with.
But if they parents won't raise kids right, and expect the schools and society to do it for them....
then dress codes are the way to go. As long as they are enforced indiscriminately.

@squidgirl : Again there have been fights over clothing. It has been on our local news. I think it is ridiculous, but at times it has come to that. Also certain clothing denotes gang membership; another reason restrictions were created. Don't get me wrong - some are a little too ridiculous. When my kiddo was in elementary- no stripes only solid polos (no logo) and only khakis or dark blue dress shorts. Then last year was a little more relaxed in junior high. Kids can still be kids, but at some point they have to start growing up. I would rather have a little structure versus chaos. There are kids in PISD that have no respect for others (students or teachers). The junior high had 4 fights within 2 weeks and for no reason. One just bullied another and because he wouldn't fight back started hitting him. Sorry to say this world is not what it used to be. I'm all for kids bring kids, but they need a little structure.

Kids are going to be kids. They are pretty much pack animals. If they want to form a gang, they will. Even if it is something as simple as how they tie their shoes. The Pearland code is easier than the last school system we were in. The only thing I would really like to see changed is the rule about shorts over 6th grade. I fail to see how it would be any harder to enforce this in the older grades than with the younger. In Christian kindergarten, there was a gang. It was called The Bad Boys Gang. Their mission was to make life hard for the girls. It can happen anywhere.

Prior to moving here (2 yrs ago) I was the administrator of a private Christian school where the students wore uniforms. On VERY special days I would announce a "No Uniform Day". I assure you clothes do affect a student's conduct therefore No Uniform Days were rare!

@jrkbird : Sad thing is young girls don't dress like kids, they try to dress like grown women, not all, but way too many! Plus the boys are no better, will wear pants down past their rears, I saw that when my daughter was back in high school, around 2011!

My son had texture issues with the uniform pants, and he wears shorts year round now that he's out of school - so I totally feel the no shorts issue.

I do know, though, that when my two were in high school at PHS and at PACE - there were two major issues that had to do with shorts.... boys just love to "pants" each other when in shorts, they may even still have a problem with it in gym class. And girls, well, girls like to push the envelope with length, then wonder why they get talked bad about and/or hit on/etc..

So I kinda see why the no shorts rule is in play. Then again, it just makes me cringe and wish parents raised kids with better morals and standards for themselves than the general populous shows the current parenting trend of "don't give a crap" shows.........
